What is causing the 'skills-gap' crisis?

The recent TalentShortage Survey has highlighted long-held concerns about the "skills gap"problem: employer's struggle to find employees with the right skills for theright roles.

Taking data from41,700 hiring managers in 42 countries, the survey revealed that 38% ofparticipating employers said they had difficulties filling jobs.

However, withroles constantly evolving and companies transforming at faster rates than everbefore, a survey from Gallup found that only 50% of workers knew exactly whatwas expected of them at work.

Jason Schwartz,CEO and Co-Founder of General Assembly, believes that today's changeableworkplace is one of the central factors in the skills-gap problem -Entrepreneur reports.

Schwartz believesthat if companies surveyed their current workers, to find out if theirday-to-day matches the job description that convinced them to apply in thefirst place, the skills-gap problem would be somewhat solved.

His comments arebacked-up by a 2016 CareerBuilder survey which found that 75% of respondentsadmitted to hiring the wrong person for the position.

If hires lack theskills needed to succeed in their job descriptions, then the skills problemsthat companies face will only get worse.

McKinsey &Company's 2015 survey found that companies were more likely to succeed if theywere had diverse hiring processes.

It concluded thatdiverse teams are likely to create "positive tension", forcing innovation andfostering skill-centred environments geared with growth mindsets.
