JAPAN - BUSINESSES INCREASINGLY HIRING FRESH COLLEGE GRADS AMID LABOUR SHORTAGE

Companies in Japan are hiring more fresh college graduates this year amid a labour shortage in the country, according to survey data from job site Disco.

The survey data, which polled more than 1,200 students, showed that 63.4% of surveyed students said they received offers on 1 June, the first day of official recruitment season. This was an increase of 8.5% compared to the previous year.

Japan's latest unemployment rate in April reached its lowest level since 1994, however, according to the Asia Times, the low unemployment rate is mostly due to a shrinking labour force and many of the jobs are temporary and pay little.

Meanwhile, a record-high 97.6% of new university graduates in Japan have landed jobs as of the 1 April start of the 2017 business year, which further reflects the demand for workers amid the labour shortage.

The labour shortage in Japan in April stood at its highest rate in more than four decades with the jobs-to-applicants ratio at 1.48 in April. Low birth rates and an aging population have resulted in a shrinking workforce in Japan.
