Firms employing illegal immigrants could be closed temporarily

 

The government has threatened to close firms that employ illegal immigrants as part of its crack down on unscrupulous employers.

 

Off-licences and take-aways could lose their licences if illegal immigrants are discovered working there and government policy makers are looking at whether this should cover mini-cab drivers and operators as well.

 

The tough new measures will make it easier for the government to prosecute employers who hire workers who don't have permission to work in England and Wales, as well as increasing the maximum jail term for employers flouting the law from two years to five.

 

In addition to punitive measures for employers, illegal workers themselves will be subject to up to six months in prison in England and Wales, while their wages could also be confiscated
